Ankle weights have many purposes and can be extremely handy for divers, especially dive instructors. Of
the many reasons to use ankle weights during a dive, one would be to take stress of the diver’s back by
reducing the “hammock effect” (hyper lordosis, or overarching, of the back). For instructors, ankle
weights can help them to comfortably kneel during pool work with students. They can also be quite
useful for dry suit divers to minimize the shift of air within their suit, making control of the lower body
easier.
