Have you ever watched a fish just hanging out in the water, staying at one particular depth with seemingly no effort? Well, the fish accomplishes this through the use of its swim bladder. Now most humans aren’t born with a swim bladder, but we have the next best thing – a buoyancy compensator. With it we can adjust our buoyancy from positive on the surface, to neutral for swimming around, to negative if you want to sit on the bottom. Your buoyancy compensator is also the backbone of your SCUBA unit. It holds directly (like the cylinder) and indirectly (like the regulator) all the separate pieces of the SCUBA unit in place. |
